India is a diabetes capital and many adults are pre-diabetic without knowing. This guide covers lifestyle, diet, monitoring, and the sugar-free vs carb-free confusion. Education only — see your doctor.

### About this concern

India has one of the highest diabetes burdens in the world, and Tamil Nadu is no exception. Many adults are pre-diabetic for years without realising it. The earlier you catch rising blood sugar, the more you can do with lifestyle alone. This page is for general education. Please get tested and consult a doctor for any decisions about medication.

### What we know

Blood sugar is the amount of glucose circulating in your blood. Common tests include fasting blood sugar, post-meal (PP) sugar, and HbA1c (which reflects the last 2-3 months). Your doctor interprets these together. Pre-diabetes is the stage before type 2 diabetes — sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range. With lifestyle changes, many people can pull their numbers back. Type 2 diabetes typically develops over years and is strongly linked to weight, inactivity, family history, and diet pattern. South Asians tend to develop diabetes at lower body weights than Western populations, which is why even a slim person can be at risk.

A very important misunderstanding among Indian shoppers: "sugar-free" does NOT mean "carb-free". A sugar-free biscuit, sugar-free sweet, or sugar-free ice cream can still be loaded with refined flour, starch, ghee, and other carbs that raise blood sugar. Read labels for total carbohydrates, not just sugar.

### What to watch for

Early signs can be subtle: increased thirst, frequent urination (especially at night), unusual tiredness, blurred vision, slow-healing cuts, frequent infections, tingling in feet, sudden weight loss, or dark patches on the neck and underarms (acanthosis). Many people have no symptoms at all. If you are over 30 with a family history, get tested at least once a year.

### What you can do safely

### When to see a doctor

Please consult a doctor if your fasting sugar is repeatedly above 100, post-meal above 140, or HbA1c above 5.7. Anything in the diabetic range needs immediate medical care, not self-management. Pregnant women should always get gestational diabetes screening — please do not skip this. If you have PCOS, thyroid issues, are on steroids, or have a strong family history, you need closer monitoring.

### What we do NOT recommend over the counter

We do not sell or recommend products that claim to "cure" or "reverse" diabetes. We do not recommend stopping any prescribed diabetes medication on your own, even if your readings look better. We do not recommend self-starting herbal capsules (karela, jamun, methi tablets, etc.) without telling your doctor — they can interact with metformin, insulin, and other prescriptions. Please get tested, get diagnosed, and follow your doctor's plan.
